CCALT to Host Succession Planning and Land Transfer Workshop at Annual CCA Convention

LAKEWOOD, Colo. — Over the next 20 years, one-third of all agricultural land is anticipated to change hands, making conversations about succession planning increasingly relevant. To support both the current generation and the rising generation, the Colorado Cattlemen’s Agricultural Land Trust (CCALT) in partnership with the Colorado Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) is hosting Changing of the Guard: A Succession Planning and Land Transfer Workshop.

Date and Time: Wednesday, June 24th, 2026, from 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM
Location: CCA Convention, Embassy Suites by Hilton Loveland Conference Center

This free, interactive workshop brings together both generations along with leading experts to help facilitate meaningful conversation about the future of land stewardship. The workshop will feature:

Dr. Shannon Ferrell, Professor of Agricultural Law at Oklahoma State University, presenting on planning for the succession of assets.

Davon Cook, Family Business Advisor for Pinion Global, presenting on succession planning for management and operations.

The first two hours will consist of a session for current generation landowners, moderated by Don Richards, and a session for next generation producers, moderated by Maggie Hanna.
The final two hours will be an open conversation, both groups together in the same room to discuss what each learned about the other and provide strategies for navigating transfer and succession more efficiently and successfully.

“I’m truly excited about this new format for our workshop. We have fewer speakers going deeper into their areas of expertise. For the first time, we’re also offering a session geared toward the next generation of large-scale ag producers – both those preparing to take over a family operation and those seeking a pathway into agriculture without one,” says Dan Skeeters, CCALT’s Land Transfer Navigator Lead.

“We have a lot of knowledge and resources to share but we’ll also have a lot to learn from the dedicated producers in the room. Agricultural land transfer is one of the most urgent and rural viability issues facing Colorado agriculture. This workshop will influence the decisions that landowners make today. Over the next two decades, these decisions will shape the future of farming, ranching, rural communities, and working lands in Colorado. We’re expecting a strong turnout, and I hope you’ll be part of it!”

Attendees will leave with actionable strategies to guide both succession planning and land transfer discussions – ensuring ranches and farms remain productive, resilient, and secure for future generations.

This event is free to attend, and current generation and rising generation ranchers are encouraged to join and take advantage of this unique opportunity.
